Web Hosting and Webspace

Webspace

MCSNet provides 100 MB of webspace that will be made available upon request (contact support). This will enable access to an ftp location where you can store files online including webpages (ie. http://members.mcsnet.ca/yourname). Please click here for a guide that may help you in using this webspace.

Web Hosting

Webhosting allows you to setup your website using your own domain name (ie. www.yourname.com). Web hosting includes up to 10 email address, 100 MB of webspace and 1 FTP user account to upload webpages and data to the server. The monthly hosting charge is $10 not including tax with a $19.95 setup fee. If you are creating your own site, you will need to purchase the name through a registrar. Please read below for information that will help detail the requirements and steps involved when setting up and using hosting.

Web Hosting Guide

Webhosting allows you to setup your website using your own domain name (ie. www.yourname.com). Web hosting includes up to 10 email address, 100 MB of webspace and 1 FTP user account to upload webpages and data to the server. The monthly hosting charge is $10 not including tax. If you are creating your own site, you will need to purchase the name through a registrar.

There are several steps to getting your website with your own domain name up and running.

1. The first step is to register the site name, this is where you would purchase the name, like domainname.com. This is done through a website registar like domainsatcost.ca.

2. After you have the domain registered, you will need to specify the DNS for where it will be hosted; this is also done through the domain registrar. The DNS server data for MCSNet is as follows:

DNS1: yoda.mcsnet.ca 66.112.177.2

DNS2: obiwan.mcsnet.ca 66.112.177.3

NOTE: It may take up to 48 hours for these settings to take effect.

3. The next step is to setup a location to host the website data. You will need to email support at MCSNet to get an ftp account activated where you can store your data for your website. We will need the name of the site you have registered. The monthly charge for this service is $10 prior to tax with a $19.95 one-time setup fee. The ftp will be tied into your user account with us with a 100 MB limit; it will use the same username and password as your email address. A strong password is recommended to prevent any unwanted attacks on your website's data.

4. The final step is to upload the website data to the webspace you have with the web hosting. There are some great website design applications like dreamweaver that handle this process quite well (settings screenshot). You will need to store your website within a folder entitled public_html. You may find some help from the guide below.

Accessing FTP and creating public_html folder

To access the ftp location where you can store your data, use the host ftp.mcsnet.ca with your username and password. You can use an ftp client to connect to this, or you can use Windows Explorer. Note: some computers require to connect to ftp with 'passive access', you will need to use an ftp client in this situation, as windows explorer does not have this as an option.

The following guide shows access using windows explorer:

To start, open Computer or 'My Computer'

In the address bar at the top, type in ftp.mcsnet.ca and hit enter

explorer

You will be prompted for your username and password

ftp.mcsnet.ca in address bar

Once you have logged in for the first time you will be presented with a blank folder, where you can drag and drop data into.

empty folder

If you are looking to have a website here (where the site will be http://members.mcsnet.ca/username), you will need to store it in a folder entitled public_html

public_html

This is where you will put files for your website including the main page of index.html
